About
Prof. Susan Shelmerdine, a consultant paediatric radiologist at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and UCL associate professor, discusses the current challenges in children's imaging and healthcare AI innovation. As an NIHR Advanced Fellow researching AI technologies for paediatric imaging, she identifies two main obstacles: the lack of AI solutions specifically designed for children and the NHS's resistance to innovation due to focus on daily operational challenges like backlogs and workforce issues. During RAIS 2025, she engaged with diverse stakeholders, including C-suite executives, venture capitalists, and engineers, gaining valuable insights into how different groups evaluate AI in healthcare. This cross-sector dialogue has enhanced her understanding of what's possible and how to foster more meaningful conversations about AI solutions that could improve outcomes for children.
